I have found this approach useful in helping people deal with depression and anxiety. We concentrate on how you feel about yourself, your sense of self-worth, and the way you relate with other people. I work to understand your experience from your point of view, and the relationship we have as client and counsellor is open and genuine, based on mutual regard and respect. Together we work towards you having a greater acceptance of yourself and a better understanding of your feelings.
This approach shares the same core principles as psychoanalysis, but is less intensive and more focused on immediate problems, attempting to find a quicker solution. I trained for 5 years in this approach. It seeks to make you aware of your unconscious processes and the way these affect the way you relate and react. Many of our earliest experiences affect us in our present lives and relationships. By uncovering the links with our past feelings and thoughts we can often understand why we unconsciously feel and think as we do now. We would look to understand your unconscious defences. They may protect your feelings from current events which recall previous painful experiences, but if these defences do not work to your overall benefit we can work on how to move on from them.
Whatever the level of your problems, I allow each of you to feel comfortable to have your say. I focus on increasing the understanding of things from the other's point of view, something that often breaks down in relationships.
Whether it’s the odd disagreement, repeatedly arguing, or you simply feel you have lost the fun or loving element from your relationship, having the opportunity to discuss issues with a neutral counsellor, in a safe and supportive place, can be very helpful. There is no need to wait until problems become more serious.
Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can all experience at some point in our lives. We can work together to help you recover the motivation, perspective, and enjoyment that you had in your life.
Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger after traumatic events. I can help you overcome these symptoms and support you through the process of grief and healing.
Relationship counselling can be beneficial to couples who are looking to strengthen their emotional connection, in all stages of their relationship. Therapy sessions can be held with both partners and are a supportive place to discuss issues and solutions to strengthen your relationship.
